Year 9 Explore Careers in Geography with Geothermal Engineering Ltd.

In May, our Year 9 students enjoyed an inspiring Careers in Geography workshop delivered by Geothermal Engineering Ltd. (GEL), providing a valuable opportunity to discover how Geography can lead to exciting careers in the renewable energy sector.

As part of their KS3 Natural Resources topic, students explored Cornwall's pioneering geothermal industry and learned about the UK's only operational geothermal power plant. The workshop gave students a real-world insight into how geothermal energy is harnessed and the important role it plays in supporting a more sustainable future.

Working alongside industry professionals, students developed their understanding of the science behind geothermal energy while discovering the wide range of career opportunities available within Cornwall's growing geoscience sector. The session highlighted how the knowledge and skills gained through studying Geography can open doors to careers in environmental science, engineering and renewable energy.

Students also investigated the critical minerals that are essential for renewable technologies, including solar panels and electric vehicles. They explored the global challenges surrounding the supply of these resources and considered the important role Geography plays in managing natural resources sustainably and addressing environmental issues.

The workshop was a fantastic opportunity for students to connect their classroom learning with real-world applications, broadening their understanding of future career pathways while reinforcing the importance of sustainable resource management.

We would like to thank Geothermal Engineering Ltd. for delivering such an engaging and informative workshop and for inspiring our students to consider the exciting opportunities available within the geoscience and renewable energy industries.
