Headteacher Letter to Parents/Carers - 24.03.23

Dear parents and families

Please see a number of up-dates and reminders below:

Rewards and merits
I am delighted that students have been awarded over 60,000 merits so far this year. In addition to our existing merit systems, we are going to be awarding Student of the Week certificates from this week onwards. There will be nominations for each faculty every week for outstanding effort and achievement. We want to reward students for displaying courage, kindness and resilience in their learning. I am delighted to have been signing so many Gold Merit postcards (75 merits in Year 7-9 and 50 merits in Year 10 –11). We are also starting to see our first Platinum winners coming through, too! Well done, everyone.

Year 11 preparation for exams
I was so impressed by the maturity and commitment of Year 11 students as they undertook their most recent set of mock exams. Students and families will be receiving progress up-dates very soon. We are encouraging Year 11 students to keep going with their ‘100 Hours of Revision Challenge’ to make sure they are well prepared for the start of the main exam season. Revision drop-ins and taught Period 5 sessions will continue after Easter and do look out for Easter Revision sessions offered in the holidays.

Year 7 Progress Evening
We are looking forward to welcoming students and families on Thursday, 30th March. Following feedback, we have moved to an electronic booking system. We have released a small number of additional appointments due to demand. Please contact Reception for information about how to book appointments online.

Safety at the front of school
The school is a busy place at the start and end of each day. Please help us keep everyone moving safely to their destinations by driving carefully and considerately if you are dropping off or picking up at the front of school.

Excellent attendance
Attendance matters! We want everyone to maximise their success by attending school every day. Please read the information below carefully and if there is anything we can do to support your child’s attendance, please get in touch with us by emailing attendance@liskeard.net

A reminder regarding absence processes: If your child is absent from school, please can you call the school every day of their absence before 9.15 am. Please leave a message detailing why specifically they are unable to attend. Please can we also ask you to let us know of any medical/orthodontist appointments in advance. This helps save us having to make an unnecessary phone calls home.

Please note: If your child is absent from school without authorisation, you will be committing an offence under the Education Act 1996. We may submit a request to Cornwall Council for a Penalty Notice to be issued, in accordance with Sections 444A and 444B of the said Act. Penalty Notices are issued per liable parent, per child and each carry a fine of £60 if paid within 21 days or £120 if paid after this but within 28 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice may result in legal action. Absence not authorised by the school may result in a prosecution in the Magistrates’ Court under Section 444(1) or Section 444(1A) of the Education Act 1996, leading to a fine of up to £2,500 and/or a custodial sentence. Cornwall Council may also apply for the costs incurred in taking the matter to Court.

Yours faithfully

Dan Wendon
